In 1988, I began the teaching credentialing program at San Francisco State University while working full time as a night auditor and at the front desk of a local Victorian Hotel. After college graduation, and my first year teaching (during the summer of 1992) I challenged myself by riding a bicycle from California to Alaska's Mount Denali solo. This experience not only tested my endurance, but entrenched my interest in and participation in endurance cycling, local history, mountain climbing, outdoor science, and environmental education.
In 1998-02, I outlined my own course of Interdisciplinary Studies at Sonoma State University while at the same time co-founding two free youth stewardship restoration programs. This opportunity allowed me to develop my organizational and supervisory skills as an administrator, while at the same time allowing me to further expand my abilities utilizing hands on teaching techniques and experiential learning strategies.
In February 2004, my then wife and I were placed by Search Associates at the American Pacific International School in Chiang Mai Thailand which we both enjoyed tremendously. The opportunity to travel beyond the normal limits of being a simple tourist, to becoming part of an international community, was among the most rewarding of my life.
In 2009, I returned to Thailand and became a Certified TEFL instructor and was invited back to work at APIS, where I spent a year honing my elementary ESL craft, before moving on to become the director of TEFL Chiang Mai certification program, as well and being hired as aThai staff English teacher and primary years active reading specialist for a newly constructed Green, Bi-lingual-Buddhist & "Environmentally Minded" Panyaden International School, which opened in March 2011 in Chiang Mai.
As a result, I learned a great deal and walked away a more experienced and appreciative person in the process. In turn I have come to realize that it is extremely difficult to change the world on our own, as individuals with out a community of support. Conversely, I have found that we can play a prominent role in positively affecting the out come of students learning, by focusing upon our actions, and by recognizing the needs of each and every student, one relationship at a time
I have a wide range of skills and experience but my primary passion is education. I am also a big advocate of gamifying learning. I feel that learning (and teaching) should be enjoyable, but many traditional classrooms have taken all the fun and intrigue out of it. I am creating a series of books and educational videos that teaches teachers how to turn the ordinary classroom into an exciting, ongoing, RPG (role playing game).
I am also running a free, online, Minecraft server (set up as a MMORPG) that will be used for teaching EFL, geography, history, physics, science, leadership, business and other skills. (http://www.mind-craft-school.com/) And I am also creating online courses that teaches educators and teachers how to gameify their courses. (more info to come on gamifying learning but in the mean time feel free to join my group on Education and Gamification https://www.linkedin.com/groups/Education-Gamification-6688462 )
Philanthropy is an important part of my life as well, and it is my privilege to assist The Center for Children's Happiness (http://www.cchcambodia.org/) here in Cambodia.
